Russia fines Google USD 360 million

On July 18 a court fined the company for not taking down material that Russia calls fake news. Roskomnadzor (the Russian Communications Commission) said that Google had allowed extremist and terrorist propaganda to stay up, including incitement for minors to protest. The government has been getting severe with Western social media companies for the last several years. The fine is the heaviest ever imposed by a Russian court on a media firm. Google has withdrawn from Russia. The company refuses to pay, so the fine is unenforceable. In March 2022 Russia claimed that Google and YouTube expedite terrorist propaganda. It has been speculated that they will be blocked.
