Russia hosts BRICS Games

On June 23 the games closed in Kazan. The host city is the capital of Tatarstan, the home of an indigenous ethnic minority. At the BRICS Games Russia won the most medals. 53 countries sent athletes. There were athletes from non-BRICS countries. Many from ex-USSR countries such as Uzbekistan and Belarus were allowed to compete. To some extent this was a mini-Olympics. Russia is not allowed to send some athletes to the Olympics because of doping. The Olympics is important to Russian national pride. In the Soviet era it was the one arena in which the USSR regularly beat the USA. The BRICS Games coincided with the Tatar festival of Sabantuy. This ancient festival marks the start of the sowing season. The festival is celebrated with dances, wrestling matches and theater plays. The BRICS is more important than ever for Russia. It is a chance to build bonds with non-Western and even anti-Western countries. Many of them are from the Global South. It underscores that Russia is not as isolated as some think.
