Russia imposes digital passes due to coronavirus

On November 1 TASS news agency reported the new scheme. People will have to show a pass to enter certain buildings. The system was used in Moscow briefly in the summer of 2021. The scannable barcode system will combat the spread of black market passes and forged vaccination certificates. Russia is experiencing a surge in cases. There is a nationwide non-working week to try to act as a circuit break. Russia vowed not to have a second lockdown. Coronavirus is spreading because of a low vaccination rate. It is hoped that this policy will spur people to get vaccinated.All 85 regions shall impose a QR code mandate. In 7 regions the mandate will be delayed until mid December. A list of venues where the passes are required shall be published. Moscow has the highest coronavirus rate but also the highest vaccination rate. It demands QR codes to enter a museum or theatre. As of November 8 QR codes will be mandatory for attending entertainment or sports events with over 500 spectators. St Petersburg requires QR codes to enter even shopping malls and hotels. QR codes are scanned on smartphones when seeking admission to a building. These display the user's info and vaccination status. On October 25 all Russian regions ordered vaccination for certain types of workers.
