Russia intensified attack on Vuhledar

On February 14 Ukraine showed footage of several damaged Russian military vehicles in Vuhledar, Ukraine. Beside the vehicles were what appeared to be the corpses of Russian troops. Vuhledar is 150 km from Bakhmut - a city that Russia is determined to take. Russia admits that Ukrainian resistance is ferocious.  It is thought that one of Russia's elite units, the 76Th Air Assault Division, will attack Bakhmut. Ukraine is attacking Russian convoys with some success. Both Ukraine and Russia are suffering ammunition problems.  A Russian regional news site reported that a 100-strong company of the 55th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade was reduced to 8 men. Ukraine has used landmines. Russia does not have enough de-mining equipment, which means that its troops are vulnerable to land mines as they advance. Russian pro-war bloggers have openly expressed their frustration with Russia's campaign. Ukraine has expressed it astonishment at the high risk tactics used by Wagner Group, which is very wasteful of the lives of its troops. On February 12 the head of Wagner said his men had taken a village just north of Bakhmut. The only road supplying the city is now in jeopardy. It is thought that Russia learned from 2022 that it cannot attack on several axes of advance. Therefore it will concentrate on Bakhmut. There might be attacks in other sectors but these will be diversions. Russia is advancing only about a kilometer a day. But a Ukrainian orderly retreat could turn into a rout at some point.
