On May 18 the vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences said that 50,000 scientists have left the country since 2018. He said that the government's policy of technological sovereignty is unachievable while the country is hemorrhaging highly educated scientists. He said that funding for research needs to triple if Russia is to catch up with advanced countries. On May 19 three scientists were arrested on suspicion of espionage. The Russian Academy of Sciences said this could slow down advances of hypersonic missile development that Russia needs so badly. Any article published could lead to an arrest. Scientists are afraid to research. The number of scientists under the age of 30 has gone down 25% since 2013. There are now only 53,000 out of 340,000 in total. Scientists emigrate for better salaries, well-funded research and political freedom.
