Russia on the brink of conquering Luhansk District

On May 24 Russia intensified its attack around Luhansk. Taking the district is one of Russia's key war aims. The war has now been going on for three full months. Severodonetsk is the vortex of the war. The Ukrainian town is surrounded on three sides. There is only one bridge that the Ukrainians can use to supply the town. Ukraine now faces a dilemma: to reinforce the town or to withdraw. Ukraine probably does not want Severodonetsk to turn into another Azovstal where all the defenders are eventually captured. Civilians have been told it is too late to evacuate. The town is being extremely heavily shelled. East Ukraine is the focus of Russia's campaign. Zelensky has warned the Ukrainian people that the next few weeks will be hard. Zelensky repeated his demands that Russia be isolated from the world economy. He wants a worldwide oil embargo on Russia and a block on all banking transactions as well as blocking its IT sector. On May 24 a counselor at the Russian Mission to the UN in Geneva resigned in protest at the war. He said it was a crime against Ukraine and Russia. He lamented the return to Soviet slogans and said that Foreign Minister Lavrov had undergone a degeneration.
