Russia political/pandemic update: back to 1984

Unsurprisingly, the conflict between Russia and NATO/West has continued to escalate, albeit still verbally, so far. It has been almost a year since the events in Ukraine unfolded, and in some sense, it has become routine for many outside observers, i.e., people not affected directly or affected little. As the situation becomes increasingly Orwellian, it looks like a kind of remake of the famous novel. The modern remake of “1984” is becoming increasingly confusing, especially because ordinary people (not only in Russia, but on both sides) do not possess complete and unbiased information about what is happening on the frontlines or behind the scenes as this information is regarded highly confidential because the authorities worldwide believe that ignorance is strength and censorship is free speech.

It is thus unsurprising that the Russian opinion polls point to a growing understanding that the conflict in Ukraine will last a long time, which is very different from the perception that dominated right after the conflict erupted. Still, the majority of Russians believe that the country is advancing in the right direction and can deal with new packages of sanctions going forward.
