Russia prepares to repel Ukrainian offensive

Russia has strengthened its multilayered defenses. Ukraine's counter offensive is expected in May 2023. By then the spring will have thawed out the mud. Russian lines are over 800 km long. Russia's offensive has almost petered out. Russia holds most of Bakhmut but was supposed to have taken the entire city weeks ago. There are trenches, anti-tank ditches, dragon's teeth, raised barriers and minefields. It is thought it will take a long time to get through each echelon. Russia was shocked by the speed of the Ukrainian counter offensive in Kharkiv Region in September 2022. Russia has vowed not to let that happen again. Russia tends to funnel attackers into an area that it wants to fight in. Ukraine may well launch diversionary attacks. The head of Wagner Group complained that Russia suffers 5 casualties for every 1 Ukrainian loss. This confirms what the Ukrainians have been saying. The Wagner head said that his organization is not being given enough ammunition. Russia has significant numerical superiority. Its recruitment drive and draft is ensuring this. The new recruits have been rushed through training but sheer numbers will help Russia. Western experts believe that even a highly successful Ukrainian counter offensive will not end the war. NATO said it has delivered 98% of the 230 tanks promised and many more armored vehicles. NATO countries have trained many Ukrainian soldiers. The UK alone has trained 20,000 Ukrainians since 2022.
