Russia raises draft age limit

On July 25 the State Duma passed the law. It also forbids draftees from going abroad. Previously males aged 18-27 were obliged to do a year of military service. Now this upper age has been raised to 30. There has been talk of raising the lower age to 21. The co-author of the bill said that the draft law had to be changed because of the demographic situation. Russia has suffered sub replacement fertility for over 30 years. Russia enlisted 147,000 conscripts in spring 2023. It needs to conscript a similar number in fall 2023. On July 29 the bill goes to the Federation Council, which is the upper chamber of the Russian Parliament. The Federation Council is almost certain to pass the bill, which Putin will surely then sign.
