Russia says its pact with Armenia does not cover Nagorno Karabakh

On October 7 Moscow reiterated that its military assistance treaty with Armenia does not apply to Nagorno Karabakh. This region legally belongs to Azerbaijan but it controlled by Armenia and has had an Armenian majority for centuries. Moscow is making this statement to show that it is eager to avoid fighting especially as Turkey is helping Azerbaijan in all but actually fighting. Russia reapplied that its security pact with Armenia will apply if Armenian proper is attacked. The Azerbaijanis have been careful not to attack Armenia proper. Russia and Armenia are part of the Collective Security Organization (CSTO) which include four other former USSR countries.Fighting has now entered its 10th day. Moscow has called for a ceasefire. Armenia has not said it is willing to talk to Baku. This is either because they are losing or they are under pressure from Russia. It is possibly both.Putin has spoken to the Armenian PM five times since September 27. He has spoken to the Azerbaijani president once in that time. Russia support Armenia's claim that Turkey has sent Syrian rebels to help the Azerbaijani Army.
