Russia slows Twitter due to content dispute

On March 9 Twitter feeds were slowed down. The government is angry that Twitter has not been removing prohibited content. The Russian Communications Authority announced that it had taken this action. Twitter has been slowed on all cellphones and 50% of computers.Twitter has been fined in relation to 3,000 posts since 2017. The banned content included information encouraging suicide, child porn and narcotics.The government warned that it might block Twitter entirely if behavior does not change. The State Duma is mulling calling for similar action against Facebook.In February 2021 Putin said foreign social media networks should be fined as they are discriminating against the Russian media. Despite being a vigorous censor Putin denounced foreign social media for limiting the right to free expression.Facebook, Google, TikTok and Telegram all face a court case in April 2021. This relates to not taking down calls for protests.
