Russia supports Saudi Arabia over the Khashoggi issue

The Russian Government has backed Saudi Arabia's version of events with relation to the death of Jamal Khashoggi. Dmitry Peskov said that no one has any reason to doubt the explanation of the Saudi Arabian Government. No other country outside the Middle East has offered such support. Peskov is President Putin's spokesman.Why is Moscow supporting Riyadh on the issue? They wish to curry favour with the Saudis with a view to ending the conflict in Syria. Saudi Arabia was the armourer and the treasurer of the Islamist rebels. If Russia is helpful now this may induce the Saudis to end their support for the rebels. They has been reducing it anyway - tacitly admitting that they had lost.
