Russia suspends grain deal

On October 29 suspended its involvement in the grain agreement that allowed Ukrainian foodstuffs to be shipped out via the Black Sea. Moscow ended the agreement it said because of drone attacks on Russian ships in Crimea on October 29. Russia said this was the biggest drone attack thus far. Russia said the United Kingdom had helped the drone attacks. It also blamed the UK for blowing up the pipeline in the Baltic Sea. London said both accusations were false. Ukraine said the Russian explanation for ending the grain deal is bogus. The United Nations appealed with Russia to continue the grain deal. The President of Guinea Bissau was in Moscow on October 28 pleading with Putin to continue the grain deal. The deal was due to end on November 19 2022 but could have been extended. The UN brokered agreement allowed ships carrying Ukrainian grain to be inspected by Russia to ensure that they were not carrying contraband into or out Ukraine. The ships sailed through Turkish waters into the Mediterranean. Egypt, Bangladesh and Lebanon are some of the countries that are heavily reliant on Ukrainian food. The agreement enabled 9 million tons of grain to be exported since July 2022. Ukraine asked other nations to pressure Russia to continue the grain deal.
