Russia to strengthen links with Myanmar

On March 26 the Russian deputy defense minister visited Myanmar and expressed his country's wish to increase trade and cooperation. He was meeting the Mynmarese Army's commander in chief. Russia sells significant quantities of arms to Myanmar.At the UN, Russia has voted against any criticism of Myanmar. Moscow considers the recent putsch in Myanmar to be a domestic issue that is not for international discussion. In January 2021 Russia signed a deal to sell Pantsir S1 SAMs, Orlan 10E drones and radar to Myanmar.Annual Myanmar arms purchases from Russia are in the tens of millions of USD. Russia's fulsome support for the regime is in stark contrast to China which for once openly criticized what Myanmar was doing with regard to the putsch and crackdown.
