Russian Army and Police ready to assist Lukashenko

On August 28 Russian soldiers participated in joint exercises with their Belarussian comrades along the Polish Border. Lukashenko falsely claimed that NATO troops are massing on the frontier and NATO is the wirepuller of the opposition. On August 26 Putin announced that his police are ready to go to Belarus to help the police there if requested. The Union Treaty was signed in 1999 envisaging the total reunification of the two countries grants police officers in one country police powers in the other whenever the two states agree. 300 protesters and journalists were arrested on August 28. Lukashenko's strategy of belligerence towards the opposition rapprochement with Russia appears to be gradually working. The numbers of protesters are slowly dipping and the most vociferous are already behind bars. In recent years Lukashenko turned against the idea of unity with Russia and even imprisoned those who advocated union with Russia. Ironically, it may take this election crisis to achieve that union in all but name.
