Russia arrests dissident politicians and journalists

On December 29 police arrested journalists and politicians in seven regions on suspicion of disseminating falsehoods about the war. Many of those arrested are associates of Ilya Ponomaryov, who is a Russian politician who has lived in Ukraine since 2022. Ponomaryov was arrested in absentia earlier in 2022. He has been charged with spreading lies about the army, which carries a 10-year sentence. Some of those arrested are members of the Communist Party. The CP is usually pro-Kremlin. Some arrestees have been already found guilty of disobeying police orders and given 15 says in jail.
