Russian bans tomatoes from Azerbaijan

On December 9 Moscow announced that from December 10 Azerbaijan tomatoes cannot be imported. The ostensible reason is that they are contaminated with substances that are injurious to human health The ulterior motive might be to penalize Azerbaijan for inviting in Turkish troops.Over 30% of tomatoes imported into Russia are grown in Azerbaijan. After hydrocarbons, Azerbaijan's main export is vegetables. Tomatoes account for 1% of foreign earnings. On December 10 Azerbaijan is performing a major military parade to celebrate its victory.Armenia was armed almost exclusively with Russian made weapons. Armenia's defeat looks bad for the Russian armaments industry. However, Azerbaijan had a three to one numerical advantage. There are few coincidences in Russian geopolitics. In 2015 Russia forbade the importation of Turkish tomatoes after the Turks shot down a Russian warplane. Tomatoes from one region of Uzbekistan will also be banned from December 10. That appears to be based on a genuine phytosanitary concern.
