Russian border guards leave Armenian airport

On July 31 the last of them left Yerevan Airport. In early 2024 Armenia insisted that the Russian border guards be withdrawn. This is due to souring relations between the two former Soviet republics. Moscow has been frank that Armenia's demand has damaged relations. Armenia is a member of Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). This is a Russian-led military alliance of 6 former Soviet nations. Armenia is bitterly disappointed that the CSTO did nothing for the country during the 2020 war against Azerbaijan and subsequent clashes. Armenia has frozen membership of the CSTO, and the Prime Minister has openly considered leaving it. Armenian border guards provided a ceremonial goodbye to their Russian colleagues and thanked them warmly for their decades of service. Russia still retains one army base in Armenia. Russian borders guards are still deployed on Armenia's borders with Turkey and Iran. Turkey is a NATO country but has good relations with Russia. It is the only NATO country not to impose any sanctions on Russia. Turkey has bad relations with Armenia dating back to the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Turkey is the brother nation of Azerbaijan, which is the foe of Armenia. Yerevan and Ankara have held talks about opening the border to trade but so far they have not reached an agreement.
