On April 25 Moscow Vnukovo Airport furloughed many staff. A third of airport staff have been told they might be made redundant. Another Moscow airport has already done so. Passenger numbers have fallen dramatically in the last 2 months.Vnukovo Airport's traffic was down 19% Y o Y in April 2022. It is no longer recruiting staff.36 countries have banned Russian and Belarusian airlines. Russia and Belarus have responded in kind. Russia has stopped even some permitted flights from departing because many planes used by Aeroflot are foreign owned and would be seized if they touched down in certain countries. Domestic flights to 11 airports close to Ukraine have been restricted because of the danger that civilian aircraft will be shot down accidentally. The situation is grim for Russian airlines. They have lost more of their foreign destinations. Besides that the economic situation means that many Russians cannot afford to fly so much. Moreover, fuel prices have risen. Aeroflot and other Russian airlines rely on equipment for their planes that Western countries now refuse to sell. Minor Russian airlines might go bust. The state will probably save Aeroflot at all costs.
