On May 12 it was announced that Sergei Shoigu has been removed as Defense Minister and has been appointed the Secretary of the Security Committee instead. Because of his new post it is clear that Shoigu is not disgraced. However, his new post is seen as a non-job. There have been significant problems with the military in recent months. Not enough ground has been gained in Ukraine, and a deputy defense minister has been charged with taking millions of USD in bribes. The new Defense Minister is Andrei Belousov. Previously he was First Deputy Prime Minister. Belousov has mostly served in economic roles. He has a keen interest in technology and it is thought that he will upgrade the armed forces' technology. Neither Belousov nor Shoigu were ever in the military. Putin's spokesman said that Belousov was appointed because he would ensure that the economy and the country's security needs work together. Nikolai Patrushev has been fired as Secretary of the Security Council. Patrushev is from St Petersburg like Putin, and they were friends for decades. Patrushev is seen as one of the most hawkish of Putin's inner circle. The Kremlin said it will appoint Patrushev to another post but it has not said what it is. The rest of Putin's cabinet kept their posts after Putin was re-inaugurated in May 2024.
