On July 24 Sergei Lavrov visited Egypt. He is trying to convince Egypt that Russia will honor the grain export deal. Ukraine is Egypt's major supplier of grain. Many Egyptians live on USD 2 per day. If the prices rises a few cents there will be riots. Egypt has a warm relationship with Russia based on arms purchases and tourism. Lavrov will address the Arab League in Cairo. Egypt is neutral on Ukraine. Notably the president chose not to meet Lavrov. Lavrov is due to visit Ethiopia, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These countries are impacted by the security of grain as well soaring oil and gas prices. 22 million tons of grain are struck in Ukraine. The first exports should start by the end of July 2022. Lavrov said 70 ships from 12 countries were waiting to pick up grain. Russia has a good reputation in Africa due to anti-colonialism. Lavrov was keen to remind people about this. But as Ukraine was part of the USSR, it too, was part of anti-colonialism. Russian Wagner private military contractors have assisted several African countries. Moreover, Moscow will back African governments that Western governments refuse to because of human rights violations.
