Russian Foreign Minister visits neutral countries

Sergei Lavrov visited Iraq on February 6 and Mali on February 7. Both countries abstained in the UN on the Ukraine War. Mali is fighting against Islamist rebels. Wagner Group had been helping Mali in this fight. Russia claims the Wagner fighters are training the Malian Army. The United Nations accused Wagner of human rights abuses. Mali then expelled the UN human rights team. Mali ordered French troops to leave in 2020. France is the former colonial metropole of Mali. No Russian Foreign Minister has ever visited Mali before. He met the president. Mali has been given warplanes and helicopters by Russia The conflict in Mali is still ongoing. President Goita is a military ruler but has been promised to restore civilian rule in 2024. Russia has a good relationship with many African countries. Moscow is keen to capitalize on anti-Western sentiment on the continent.
