Russian Foreign Minister visits South Africa

On January 23 Sergei Lavrov met his South African counterpart for talks. South Africa is neutral in the Ukraine War. The country is quite pro-Russian because of Soviet help to the anti-apartheid movement. South Africa is the most powerful country in sub-Saharan Africa. Russia is keen to show that it does have friends besides its usual allies of North Korea, Syria and Belarus., The South African Foreign Minister hailed the cordial relations between her country and Russia. South Africa is also a member of BRICS, along with Russia. On January 17 it was announced that South Africa will hold naval drills with Russia and China in February 2023. Some in South Africa have castigated the government's stance on Ukraine. The main opposition party said that the government is pro-Russian and should be urging Russia to end the war. Russia said that Ukraine is unwilling to talk about peace. But nor is Moscow making concessions.
