Russian gas supplies to Europe slow

On October 2 Gazprom said it could not send gas to Austria for technical reasons. This is usually the excuse used when supplies are stopped for political reasons. The new right-wing government coming to office in Italy offers hope to Russia. It is composed of parties that say Italy should not suffer for the sake of Ukraine. Italy has been reducing dependence on Russian gas in 2022. But still 25% of its gas comes from Russia. Bulgaria has also elected a government that is more friendly towards Russia than the outgoing government. On October 1 a new pipeline came into service bringing gas from Azerbaijan through Turkey, Greece and North Macedonia to Bulgaria. Bulgaria therefore needs less Russian gas. On October 6 several EU leaders are due to meet in Prague to discuss the gas situation. The Nord Stream Pipeline suffered damage on October 1 leading to a fall in gas supplies. Some suspect Russian sabotage. Norway has troops guarding oil and gas plants in case there is a sabotage attempt. Norway borders Russia.Â
