Russian general fired by Putin

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 03 Apr 2023 by Alex Teddy

On April 3 several media source said that Rustam Muradov was dismissed because of failed attacks in Ukraine in Vuhledar in early 2023. The attacks resulted in considerable losses for Russia. In one battle at least 36 tanks and 67 other pieces of equipment such as artillery were destroyed because Muradov ordered tanks forward in single file due to an absence of de-mining equipment. Russia failed to take Vuhledar.  Russian commanders were under intense pressure to gain ground. Some of them lost troops and equipment to mines. Muradov had fought in Syria and the Caucasus. He was in charge of the Eastern Military District from October 2022. Despite the word "Eastern" his troops were sent to Ukraine. The Defense Minister even visited Muradov there in early 2023.  Pro-war Telegram channels were abuzz with rumors that Muradov would be fired in March 2023. The pro-war bloggers had been scathing about his performance. He commanded some elite units such as a Guards Naval Infantry Brigade, and it suffered severe losses. He was seen to have thrown away the lives of his men for little gain. The Defense Ministry has refused to comment when journalists have asked them about Muradov. It is not known who replaces him. In January 2023 Putin replaced General Surovikin with Gerasimov. Surovikin was en poste for only 3 months. Other senior commanders have also been removed.
