Russian Health Minister calls for women to give birth before education and career

On July 19 Mikhail Murashko said that many people need to make an attitudinal shift. The notion that a woman should achieve financial security before having children is wrong. Delaying having children too long heightens the risks of miscarriage and childlessness. He called for women to have 4 children ideally. The Health Ministry is restricting the use of an abortifacient drug. Murashko is pleased that abortions decreased by 4% YoY in 2022. The Russian government has spent years exhorting people to have more children. This policy has achieved very little. Russia still has sub replacement fertility. Even if the government achieves its goal of 1.9 children per woman the population will still decline but more slowly than it is due to decline otherwise. The war has caused hundreds of thousands of people to emigrate.
