Russian mercenaries killed in Mali

On July 25-26 fighting against rebels to led to the deaths of at least several Wagner fighters as well as Malian soldiers. The rebel groups call themselves the Permanent Strategic Framework for Peace, Security and Development. The Malian Army admitted to suffering 12 casualties. Social media showed the corpses of several white males at the scene but it is not certain if they are Wagner troops. Pro-war military bloggers claimed 20 Wagner troops were killed in the skirmish and a few more were taken prisoner. These sources are not entirely reliable but they seldom overstate Russian losses. Wagner Private Military Company still operates in the former French colony. Russia was delighted when Mali ordered French soldiers to leave in 2023. A military coup in 2021 brought to power a junta that is anti-Western and has a very amicable relationship with Moscow. Moscow insists that the Russian troops in Mali are not Wagner employees but they are trainers for the Malian Army. Wagner entered the country in 2021. It is perhaps surprising that Russia is using resources in Africa when they are needed in Ukraine.
