Russian military plane shot down by Ukraine

On January 24 the plane was destroyed in Russian airspace. Surprisingly, Russia acknowledged the loss and attributed it to Ukrainian action. The Ilyushin 76 crashed near Belgorod. Moscow says all on board were killed and claims that 65 were Ukrainian Prisoners of War (POWs) and 9 Russian personnel. The POWs were being transferred ahead of an exchange of prisoners. The names of the POWs have been released. But if they turn up alive it would disprove Moscow's story. It is thought that a Ukrainian rocket brought down the aircraft. Ukraine has seldom managed to shoot down a Russian plane. Shooting one down in Russian airspace is new. Ukraine claims that plane was carrying S 300 anti-aircraft missiles. It is possible that the POW story is disinformation to lower Ukrainian morale. The Ukrainians were initially jubilant at their success. The Speaker of the Russian Parliament blamed Germany and the US for the shooting down of this plane.
