Russian Navy Day is held despite drone attacks on Moscow

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 31 Jul 2023 by Alex Teddy

On July 30 Russia celebrated Navy Day. Putin was in St Petersburg. Presidents from four African countries were present. Iran sent two ships to participate. Russia displayed 46 vessels for the naval review. Putin announced 30 new ships will be built for the navy in 2023. He said almost nothing about the Ukraine War. On July 30 Russia said it brought down 3 Ukrainian drones attacking Moscow and 25 attacking Crimea. It is unclear if the data cited is accurate. 25 would be a very large drone attack. Moscow is 500 km from the Ukrainian Border. This is the third time in 2023 that Ukrainian drones have reached Moscow. Zelensky made a statement saying that Ukraine launched the drones. Ukraine has not before confirmed that its drones have attacked Moscow. The Ukrainian drones damaged an office building but did not injure anyone. Moscow's Vnukovo Airport was shut for an hour because of the drones. Russia said the US and NATO had facilitated these attacks and called them terrorist attacks. Russia says it uses electronic warfare to bring down some drones.  Ukraine is also firing more missiles into western Russia. Ukraine said its minor cities suffered missile attacks on July 29 and 30, and several people were killed. On July 30 the former President of Russia, Medvedev, said that if there is no other way to defend Crimea then nuclear weapons must be used. That suggests Russia is nervous that Ukraine's counter-offensive might get close to Crimea.
