Russian newspaper says Putin will seek re-election in 2024

On January 13 Kommersant newspaper published an article saying that Putin's campaign is being prepared for March 2024. Kommersant cited anonymous sources. The newspaper claimed that Putin has already been discussing his campaign with his aides. There had been some speculation that if Russia won the war in 2022 then Putin would retire in 2024. Putin has been in office as President or Prime Minister since 1999. In 2020 the constitution was amended to allow him to serve another two terms as president. It is anticipated that in December 2023 Putin will begin his campaign. In September 2023 there will be regional elections in about 24 regions of Russia and Occupied Ukraine. This will be a dry run for Putin's campaign. The Kremlin knows that the campaign will be more difficult than usual. The war might still be going on. Even if it is over, sanctions might still be in effect. There was an upsurge in patriotism in 2022 but if the war drags on, war weariness might set in. Putin often stressed how he built up the military and this is a reason to vote for him. However, the military has not covered itself in glory. The Kremlin has made it easier for itself. Many social networks have been banned and censorship is stricter than ever. There will be veterans of the Ukraine who are an important demographic and might tend towards Putin.
