Russian pipeline opens in Serbia

On January 1 the President of Serbia opened the Balkan Stream gas pipeline in his country. A 403 km section of the pipeline passes through Serbia. Russian has and construction companies have been instrumental in the pipeline's completion. Balkan Stream is part of Turkstream. Balkan Stream provides gas to Serbia and Hungary. Balkan Stream could be extended to more cities in Serbia. Balkan Stream is a way of Russia selling gas in Europe but bypassing Ukraine. Gas is also a means of wielding political influence. If countries thwart Russia then gas can be turned off. Though at the moment Russia's economic situation is so dire that it cannot afford to do that.Serbia is a Slavonic speaking Orthodox country. In the 1990s Russia was one of the few countries that morally supported Serbia's side in the war in that region. Russia does not want to see Serbia join the EU and NATO.The US has been forthright in denouncing Balkan Stream. It wants to diminish Russian influence and the US fears its own gas exports to Europe will be replaced by Russia.
