Russian population falling fast

On December 28 Rosstat (the Russian Statistics Agency) released forecasts for the next 15 years. There are three alternative demographic projections but all of them show Russia's natural population falling. It just depends how much. In 2019 the Russian population fell for the first time in 10 years. There are more deaths than births. Natural decrease is offset by immigration which overwhelmingly comes from former Soviet countries. Russia has 146.7 million people. By 2035 Russia will likely have around 145 million people. Meanwhile the great majority of countries are seeing population growth. The government has pursued natalist policies. These have met with very little success. Still Russia is not in the demographic death spiral that it was in the 1990s. Nonetheless Russia's fertility rate remains among the lowest on earth. Immigration is slowing. People from Central Asia can see other opportunities beyond Russia such as in China or the Middle East. Immigrant groups and indigenous ethnic minorities tend to have a higher fertility rate. Russia is becoming less and less distinctively Russian.
