Russian prisons offer inmates to work in defense industry

On March 29 this was reported in the Kommersant newspaper. The prisoners will work for Rostec, which is a state-owned military manufacturer. The head of Rostec is rumored to be a friend of Putin. The prisoners will not make missiles or aircraft because they do not have the skills. But they can work on assembly lines. Russia has 500,000 people in prison. Some 50,000 were released in 2022 to serve in Wagner mercenary units in Ukraine. In 2022 Putin asked manufacturers to step up production. In January 2023 some Rostec factories started 24-hour production to replace tanks and planes lost in the war. Rostec makes missiles too. It has 14 holdings and 700 enterprises that span some civilian industries, too.
