Russian spacecraft crashes on the moon

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 21 Aug 2023 by Alex Teddy

On August 20 Luna-25 had a botched landing on the moon according to the Russian space agency (Roscosmos). Roscosmos lost contact with the craft. It is unclear what caused the problem. Luna-25 was scheduled to land on the moon on August 21. Roscosmos has growing problems due to being cut off from Western tech, as well as budgets' being cut due to the war. Moreover, it has been rocked by corruption scandals. Roscosmos warned Putin in June 2023 that the moon mission was unsafe and the chance of success was only 70%. Putin insisted on going ahead regardless. The Kremlin proudly announced the launching of the Luna-25 mission. Luna-25 was going to be the first craft to land on moon's south pole.  Luna-25 was due to stay on the moon for 12 months and gather soil samples as well as search for water. There was even talk of lunar colonies one day. No Russian craft has landed on the moon since the Soviet era.  Russia can use the International Space Station until 2028. The European Space Agency cooperates with Russia on lunar and Mars missions. Russia risks falling behind India, which plans to land on the moon's south pole later in 2023.
