Russian women giving birth in Argentina

Since 2022 thousands of Russian women have flown to Argentina because giving birth there confers Argentine citizenship on their babies. Russians can travel to Argentina without a visa. Argentines can travel visa free to 175 countries. Some of the women came to Argentina on one-way tickets. Some Russian women say they fear that their sons will one day be conscripted into the army and sent to fight in another war, which is why Argentina citizenship is so appealing. An interpreter said 90% of these women are seeking a better future. Parents of children born in the country are given the right of residence and an easy path to citizenship. Some of the women also want to escape the effects of the Ukraine War even though women are not conscripted. They are coming in flights via Turkey and other countries.  Over 5,800 pregnant Russian women are said to have arrived since December 2022. Russia allows dual nationality. An agency can arrange a package deal for giving birth in Argentina for USD 15,000 including flights, medical care and a few weeks of accommodation. But other agencies charge more than double this. Argentina is worried that Russian organized crime syndicates are trying to obtain Argentina passports through birth tourism. The police are investigating.
