Russians attack Avdiivka

Russia is attacking the city in East Ukraine. Putin has made statements about it. He usually does not make a statement about a battle unless it is particularly important. Russia has troops on three sides of the city. Ukraine claims to have destroyed a lot of Russian tanks and artillery pieces near Avdiivka. On October 14 Ukraine confirmed that there is intense fighting in Avdiivka. The industrial city was badly damaged in 2022. Russia took it in 2014 but Ukraine retook it. 95% of the population of Avdiivka left in 2022 and 2023. Russia is intensely bombarding Avdiivka. Ukraine is very short of ammunition and is not firing back much. Avdiivka is not very important in itself. The attack on the city may force Ukraine to divert troops from its counter-offensive. Some well-placed Ukrainians are now openly saying that the counter-offensive has failed.
