Russians enter Severodonetsk

On May 31 Russia announced that its troops had entered the city on Donbas. Ukraine confirmed this. Ukraine says 1,500 of its civilians have been killed in the assault on the city and 12,000 remain trapped in the city. It seems inevitable that Ukraine will withdraw from the city. It does not have to be a major loss as 90% of its buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Therefore, Russia is not gaining much. Ukraine can blow up the bridges as its troops retreat. The fall of the city is a fillip to Russian morale. It is a blow to Ukraine. Zelensky pleaded anew for long range weapons. The US ruled out giving multiple launch rocket systems. Russia said if they were supplied this would provoke a harsh reaction. Ukraine has received some NATO howitzers. It is not receiving heavy weapons fast enough. Russia has expended a lot of effort in the attack on Severodonetsk. It is a victory but a very slow one. Russia might need to regroup before another major push. The new Russian strategy of concentrating enormous amounts of firepower in a very small area and making local gains is workable.
