In Q1 and Q2 2022 over 372,000 Russians went to Armenia. That is more than double the number in the same period in 2021. Since the mobilization in September 2022 even more Russians moved to Armenia but data is not yet available. Some of the Russians who went to Armenia in 2022 went on short visits and have since returned home. The influx of 100,000s of Russians is very impactful in a country of under 3 million people. The Russians are very welcome because Armenia has a falling population. There are over 2 million people in Russia with some Armenian ancestry. Russians are applying for citizenship to make it easier to stay in the country permanently, found businesses and obtain mortgages. Russians newspapers, cultural events, schools and restaurants have been opened. In fact Russian cuisine is very familiar to the Armenians who were part of the Russian Empire for centuries. 17,000 people applied for Armenian citizenship from January to September 2022. That was more than twice the number who applied in the whole of 2021. Those who have one Armenian grandparent can obtain citizenship very easily. Otherwise it takes 3 years of residence and a test in the language. Armenia's GDP growth was predicted to be 1.6% in 2022 but now it is 13%! However, rents are up, and some Armenians are resentful. Men who become Armenians could be drafted into the Armenian Army. Armenia has an on-off conflict with Azerbaijan. In Kyrgyzstan Russians are also seeking citizenship.
