Russo-Israeli relations at new low

This is the worst they have been since the dissolution of the USSR. The October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel were not fulsomely denounced by Putin despite Russians' being among the victims. Moscow has called for a ceasefire in Gaza. Putin even said Israel's tactics were close to Nazi ones. Hamas says the Gaza fighting has killed 20,000 people, and the vast majority of them are civilians. Russia has been calling for a ceasefire in December 2023. Hamas released Russian-Israeli hostages saying it was in gratitude for Russia's humane attitude. Moscow has hosted Hamas and Iranian representatives in talks to end the conflict. Russia's efforts to do so have won it plaudits in the Global South. Israel denounced Moscow's flirtation with Hamas. Prime Minister Netanyahu is more pro-Russian than most other Israeli prime ministers but even he has openly expressed his bitter disappointment at Moscow's Middle East policy in 2023.  In 2022 Israel voted against Russia in the UN in the vote on the Ukraine War but refrained from sanctions against Russia. Israel has not provided any military aid to Ukraine. Ukrainians and Russians wanting to escape the war have moved to Israel where they can enter visa-free. The Ukraine War has made Russia dependent on Iranian drones. This is concerning for Israel. Moscow has also sought Tehran's expertise in how to get around sanctions. Iranian airlines are still flying after 20 years of a ban on selling them spare parts. They mostly buy them from former Soviet countries like Armenia. Until recently relations between Israel and Russia were cordial. At least 12% of Israelis are people who left the USSR since 1991. They are usually linguistically and cultural...
