Saakashvili arrested, tension rises

Late in the night on December 8 Mikheil Saakashvili was arrested and this time successfully. He was escorted to jail of the Security Bureau of Ukraine (SBU). His supporters called for a new meeting on December 10 and they really gathered few thousands of protesters who called for impeachment. All those events look depressing. Observers in one voice tell that Petro Poroshenko acts the same way as ex-president Victor Yanukovitch did – a kind of déjà vu as if we moved back to the times of Euromaidan. It’s hard to believe the authorities do the same mistakes as Yanukovitch four years ago. Observers actively discuss how it could happen that post-revolutionary authorities eventually lost touch with reality. Ukrainian audience noticeably tensed. Still we see negligible risks for new revolution. Arrest of Saakashvili will painfully ricochet on Poroshenko ratings – a lot of similarities with previous president-villain. However, people are not ready for active protests yet. The story is in progress and we cannot rule out more mistakes from Poroshenko which could sparkle more aggressive people’s move on the streets.
