TURKEY - Report 29 Nov 2020 by Murat Ucer and Atilla Yesilada

Once again, without any hope that anyone will listen to it or read it, the politics author starts by explaining the centrality of the raging COVID-19 outbreak for the Turkish economy and politics. If you believe in THE VACCINE, you may skip over these pages…

Odds for sanctions by the EU to be decided at the Summit of December 10-11th are low, because the leaders have Brexit, as well as Poland and Hungary to digest on their plates. On the other hand, on the US side, a Turkish reporter claims that a rider attached to the 2021 Defense Appropriations Bill mandates the President to levy CAATSA sanctions on Turkey. We can’t yet confirm this information from alternative sources.

We haven’t given up hope on President Erdogan embracing reform, since, the politics author believes, he is coming close to doing so in terms of economic policy. Besides, being Turks, hope is all we got at this point. Perhaps a couple of sanctions will help the Erdogan-Bahceli duo to wake up and smell the coffee. Evidence on the ground, though, is extremely thin, but as said, we are Turks --and believing in miracles is part of the national personality trait.

On the econ side, we touch upon the latest normalization steps, the sorry state of CBRT reserves and a few of the important upcoming data releases very briefly inside, saving our appetite --and mental energy-- for the upcoming Quarterly report that we hope to release next Sunday.

Having gotten a perfect score of 0.00 on His Predictions in 2020, Cosmo, the Unrepentant, forecasts a 2021 that will make the Humanity beg to go back to 2020. This being His last piece of the year, He says “Merry Christmas” to all.

Let us take this opportunity to inform our readers that we are putting the Weekly Tracker on its traditional December holiday till January 3rd. As usual, our updates/flash notes will, of course, continue.
