Politics: Sheinbaum presents fourth round of cabinet appointments

MEXICO - Report 22 Jul 2024 by Guillermo Valdes and Francisco González

This past week President-Elect Claudia Sheinbaum presented the fourth round of her cabinet appointments. The latest additions were the incoming ministers of Labor, Tourism, and Culture, and the director of the Office of the Presidency. The spacing of the cabinet appointments over a several-week period, together with a series of pronouncements by Sheinbaum concerning various political issues, and her meetings with business leaders and others, including Morena legislators, consolidated some key ideas in many people’s minds since the June 2 presidential elections. These are that the cabinet appointments signal a peaceful and orderly transfer of power between the outgoing Lopez Obrador and incoming Sheinbaum presidential administrations, and that there will be continuity with regard to the main policy lines of the Fourth Transformation, AMLO’s project to radically transform Mexican society, including on contentious issues such as judicial reform and labor legislation. Both Sheinbaum’s and Lopez Obrador’s statements on these and other issues leave no doubt in this regard.

The cabinet designations have largely been accepted by all political actors. Considerable interest was focused on Marath Baruch Bolaños’ appointment/ratification as Minister of Labor (he has occupied the post since June 20) given the sensitive nature of labor issues. Earlier, Sheinbaum had designated Lazaro Cardenas Batel as director of the Office of the Presidency.

Remaining to be announced are Sheinbaum’s choices for the heads of the ministries of National Defense and the Navy, whose names will not be released until September, and the so-called "wider cabinet" appointments, in which the markets have a deep interest, mainly Pemex and CFE, due to the complex financial situation they face.
