Skirmishes on Tajik-Kyrgyz Border

On June 3 Kyrgyzstan announced that its border guards had fired into Tajikistan. The Kyrgyz said they had to return fire after the Tajiks opened fire on them unprovoked. Bishkek said troops were wounded on both sides. Tajikistan released no statement on the incident. There is a 970 km border between the two countries, and they do not agree on its delimitation. In the Ferghana Valley the borders of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are extremely complex and disputed. There are enclaves and exclaves for all three. In April 2022 at least 7 people were shot on one day on the Tajik-Kyrgyz Border. In 2021 scores of people were shot along the border. Moscow has refused to adjudicate or mediate the row between the two former Soviet republics. Both are in the CSTO. Moscow does not wish to take sides. Nor does it have the headspace to deal with this presently.
