South Africa’s May 2019 general elections polls – let the race begin

South Africa’s general elections are fast approaching, and the race is heating up. The election date of May 8, 2019 was announced by President Ramaphosa during the State of the Nation (SONA) address at the beginning of February 2019, but the proclamation was officially signed by the President on February 25 and gazetted on February 26. These will be the country’s sixth general elections since the first democratic elections took place in 1994, and it is important to note that the African National Congress (ANC) has since then been winning the majority of the nation’s votes, having governed South Africa for the past 25 years.
