South Africa Takes a Giant Leap East

South Africa is currently hosting President Xi Jinping for the 6th China-Africa Forum, being held for the first time on the continent, aiming to restructure the relationship with China from that of a "perceived new colonizer" to an effective partner in development. China, too, is keen to recast the trade-investment relations. As China gradually moves away from low-value-add polluting industries towards cleaner high-end industries and services, it is willing to relocate such industries to Africa and commit Chinese investment in such sectors. Yesterday, China and South Africa signed 26 agreements, worth over US$6.5 billion, covering auto industry, energy and logistics sectors. China will establish the largest motor manufacturer in South Africa, primarily for the African market. South Africa is keen to use China's delivery capabilities to help the economic integration of Africa, particularly in the Sub-Saharan Africa, via the construction of a continental network of railways and highways, ports and related logistics. This suits China's economic as well as its global geo-political ambitions.
