Strong protests in Guatemala in support of Bernardo Arevalo

October 5th marks the fourth consecutive day of protests and roadblocks of Guatemala's main roads. Several groups are rejecting the intervention of the Attorney General's office in the presidential transition process. During the latest round of raids, the Prosecutor's Office confiscated the voting records of the Electoral Court in what some people described as an attempt to overturn the electoral results. Supporters of the Semilla party perceived that the transition to be new administration in January could be in jeopardy. Bernardo Arevalo even stated in a press conference that he is a victim of a “slow-motion coup”. Hundreds of Arevalo's supporters are demanding the resignation of the Attorney General, Consuelo Porras, the head of the Prosecutors Office, Rafael Curruchiche, and other officials. Arevalo had presented a petition to the court to remove several corrupt agents in July. Nonetheless, this week the Supreme Court rejected his petition. Arevalo was in Washington this week and met the Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other U.S. officials in an attempt to secure a normal transition process.
