Student protests in South Africa: A middle class uprising?
A number of factors are slowly but inextricably re-shaping the political-economy landscape of South Africa in ways that could significantly erode the dominance of the African National Congress (ANC) ruling party and fundamentally shift political dynamics in next year’s municipal elections. Such factors include dwindling political support for the ANC in urban areas, leaving the political terrain in the city metros highly contestable for the first time since 1994, and the rise of the Economic Freedom Fighters, a socialist political party that identifies itself as a radical and militant movement bringing together revolutionary groups for the fight for economic emancipation. The implosion of the trade union movement places the tripartite alliance of the ANC, COSATU and the South African Communist Party under severe strain. The other key factor is the emergence of student protests at many South African universities.
