Swiss sanction Belarus

On December 12 Berne announced that it was freezing the assets of President Lukashenka, his son Viktar and 13 other senior Belarussian officials. Those on the list are prohibited from entering Switzerland including in transit. Switzerland has traditionally been strictly neutral. It is sea change for the Swiss to adopt a policy aimed at affecting the internal politics of another country.The Swiss Government said the policy is intended to force change in Belarus. The Swiss accused Lukashenka of rigging the August 2020 presidential election and orchestrating a brutal crackdown in which 27 000 peaceful protestors have been imprisoned.
