Tajikistan not exporting electricity to Uzbeks as Uzbekistan seeks more renewables

On July 28 Tajikistan announced that it cannot sell hydro-electricity Uzbekistan and Afghanistan due to lower water levels. The Nurek Plant dates to the Soviet era and it was a major earner for the poverty stricken country. Snowfall was very low last winter. The Vakhsh River is therefore very low. Uzbekistan is also suffering. On July 24 the country said that it had to cut back on electricity generation due to low water levels. Demand for electricity is too great.Uzbekistan's national grid had an agreement with Tajikistan's power monopoly Barki Tojik. The company would supply electricity to Uzbekistan until September 2020. Uzbekistan relies on burning coal and gas for 80% of its electricity. 10% is hydroelectricity. The government's wish to use renewables more has not been actualized. The aim is to use 25% renewable by 2030.In June 2020 the country put out a tender for a 100 megawatt wind power plant. A UAE company called Masdar has a deal to build a 500 watt wind power plant in Navoi Region. ACWA Power - which is Saudi - has a contract to build a wind power plant to produce up to 1 000 megawatts. The French Company TOTAL has a deal to build a 100 megawatt solar power plant.
