Tense climate between Bolsonaro and the press

The atmosphere between President Jair Bolsonaro and the press became more tense today. During a conversation with journalists near the Alvorada Palace, in Brasília (DF), Bolsonaro denied that he is interfering politically in the Federal Police (PF) and became irritated when asked if he had requested to change the PF superintendent in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The main target of Jair Bolsonaro’s ire was the Folha de São Paulo newspaper, which took a more critical stance towards the government after several clashes with the president.

The political climate between Jair Bolsonaro and the press has worsened considerably since last Sunday, when press professionals from the O Estado de São Paulo newspaper were attacked by Bolsonaro supporters in front of the Planalto Palace during a demonstration.

The tense relationship between the president and the press will continue, as the temperature of the political debate is quite high and will remain so in the coming weeks. By arguing with the press, Jair Bolsonaro is seeking to mobilize his social base. It is a strategy that has worked.
